Team 2017-2018


Lars  Boersma is 23 years old and currently in his third and last year of the International Business Law Bachelor at Leiden University. Prior to this, Lars obtained a bachelor’s degree in Fiscal Law and Economics. Additionally, he works for Leiden University’s Moot Court as a skills trainer and is president of the board of International Business Law Student Association “Mercator”. Lars applied for the Moot to take the opportunities the Moot provides and learn more about international commercial law and arbitration. He is eager to learn how (international) companies deal with business partners residing in other countries, different jurisdictions and the variety of applicable laws and rules during the 25th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.

Jolieke Claessens is a 22 year old Master’s student in Civil Law. During her Bachelors she studied in Rotterdam and Lisbon. Jolieke loves to travel, enjoys working in an international environment and is eager to learn more about arbitration. Therefore, she applied for the Willem C. Vis Moot Court. So far she describes the Moot Court as a great experience, due to the challenging assignments, the motivated team and the skilled coaches.

Pieter-Paul Elion is a third year International Business Law student at Leiden University. In addition to participating in the Moot team, he works part-time for the court of Rotterdam and is a board member of the IBL student association ‘Mercator’. In the final years of his bachelor’s degree, Pieter-Paul was looking for a challenge to turn  his knowledge into practice. Following his enthusiasm for pleading and creating arguments for the Moot Court course at the University, he decided to take it a step further and join the Leiden Willem C. Vis team. Pieter-Paul wants to challenge and improve his knowledge on topics of international commercial arbitration and he is eager to increase his oral pleading abilities. He looks forward to combining knowledge, skills and a great amount of fun to win the competition with the team!

Olga Korneeva is a Master’s student at the Leiden University. Under her belt she has two law degrees in Russian and Dutch law. She has a particular interest in creative solutions for legal problems through mediation and arbitration. The Willem C. Vis Moot Court provides the perfect platform to build an international network in a creative and competitive environment. Moreover, it gives an opportunity to learn the state of art in arbitration from the best professionals.


Malou Le Graet is currently a Master’s student of Public International Law and Civil Law at Leiden University. She grew up in Paris and Tunisia and she has French and Dutch nationality. She is internationally minded and passionate about international law. The Willem C. Vis Moot Court is the perfect opportunity for her to combine her interests of mooting and international law and arbitration. She wants to extend her knowledge of international commercial law  and  practice her writing and oral skills. Malou enjoys the hard work with the team while researching legal arguments to convince the jury. She views the Moot Court as a great opportunity to represent Leiden University in an international setting while competing against other universities’ teams.

Larissa Leppänen is completing her Master’s studies on Public International Law at Leiden University. Dispute settlement and its various forms have always interested her and the Moot Court offers the perfect opportunity to gain new experiences in the field. She has previously competed in the European Human Rights Moot Court and is now eager to learn more about advocacy in commercial arbitration. Larissa enjoys challenging herself in an international atmosphere and wants to put her knowledge on commercial arbitration to a test in the Willem C. Vis Moot. Most importantly, she is looking forward to achieving great results in the competition together with the team!


Yi Shen is a student in the International Civil and Commercial Law (Advanced LL.M.) program of Leiden University. She obtained her bachelor degree in China and previously studied Legal Research in Utrecht University. She has a strong interest in international commercial arbitration and has participated in several ICC arbitration cases during her internships at Chinese law firms. She likes to live with high-intensity work every day and participating in the Moot really enriches her daily life.


Ana Moncada obtained her bachelor’s degree in Law in Mexico and is currently in the International Civil and Commercial Law Advanced programme at Leiden University. She was awarded with the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme and has worked for the energy industry as a corporate lawyer. She decided to participate in the Moot as a research assistant since coupling her studies with the arbitration practice will help her enhance her career as a lawyer.
